Functional Laboratory Testing

Dr. Caroline believes it is important to do a comprehensive evaluation to not only address your symptoms but also to find and address the source of these symptoms.  While a lot of information can be obtained through evaluations performed in the office, laboratory testing is often helpful in further clarifying the source of the issue and the most appropriate treatment.  A variety of laboratory tests are available at Whole Health & Welness, including:

Blood Tests

Dr. Caroline can order the same blood tests ordered by your general internist and is part of a network that can provide many laboratory tests at a discounted price. She analyzes the results using functional laboratory analysis based on current research instead of a disease based model, allowing her to find health issues that the most medical doctors miss.  While available tests are not limited to this list, commonly ordered blood tests include:

  • CBC with differential checks for:

    • infections

    • anemias and nutritional deficiencies

    • subclinical dehydration

  • Complete Metabolic Panel (CMP) gives a genera view of the function of many organs such as:

    • liver

    • kidneys

    • adrenals

  • Lipid Panel (Total Cholesterol, HDL, LDL, Triglycerides)

  • Comprehensive Thyroid Panel (TSH, Free T4, Free T3, Total T4, T3 Uptake, Thyroid Antibody Tests, and Reverse T3) gives a comprehensive view thyroid health and interactions with the pituitary and liver

  • Food Sensitivity Test (IgG) tests for 96 common food sensitivities.  Food sensitivities are associated with a number of health concerns including mood and behavioral issues, pain, digestive issues, skin rashes and fatigue.

  • Food Allergy Test (IgE) checks for true allergies

Salivary Hormone Testing

Saliva is a less invasive and more cost effective way to test hormones than blood.  Salivary hormone testing is also more accurate than blood testing because the hormones found in saliva are not bound, so they represent the level of hormones that are actually available to be used by the body.  Salivary hormone panels available at Whole Health & Wellness include:

  • Female Hormone Panel tests how your hormones are fluctuating throughout your full cycle.  The female hormone panel helps clarify the causes and best treatment for symptoms such as:

    • PMS

    • infertility

    • irregular or painful periods

    • low libido

    • acne

    • migraines

    • male pattern hair growth

  • Menopausal Hormone Panels are available as both peri-menopausal and post-menopausal panels to help clarify the best treatment for menopausal symptoms

  • Male Hormone Panel tests the balance of several hormones to help find the cause and best treatment for symptoms such as:

    • infertility

    • sexual dysfunction

    • decreased libido

    • hair loss or thinning

    • decreased muscle mass

    • fatigue

    • irritability and depression.

  • Adrenal Stress Index tests for adrenal function throughout a full day to see how the body is responding to chronic stress.  The information from the Adrenal Stress Index test helps more efficiently treat related symptoms such as:

    • insomnia or difficulty waking

    • anxiety, depression and irritability

    • fatigue

    • poor memory

    • chronic infections

    • blood sugar issues

Stool Tests

Dysfunction in the gastrointestinal system can have effects throughout the body leading to dysfunction in the immune system, neurotransmitters and brain function, inflammatory reactions such as eczema and musculoskeletal pain, and many other conditions.  Stool testing can be used to evaluate:

  • pathogens (parasites, bacteria, etc) in your digestive system

  • levels of good bacteria

  • how well you are digesting nutrients

  • levels of inflammation

  • much more

Urinalysis can provide insight into many functions of the body including digestion, cellular energy production, processing of neurotransmitters, and nutrient sufficiency.  These tests can be used to assess and appropriately treat a number of conditions including:

  • musculoskeletal pain

  • digestive issues

  • mood disorders (anxiety, depression, etc)

Salivary MethylGenetic Testing

The recent advances in genetic testing and mapping has lead to the ability to assess for variants in the DNA, and the effects these are having on the patient.  Many patients have come to Dr. Caroline with a diagnosis of an MTHFR variant, and have not responded well to the standard medical treatment.  Dr. Caroline has had tremendous success through treatments based on a broader analysis of the patient’s DNA in relation to the Methylation pathway, the specific symptoms presenting, and often the analysis of additional laboratory tests including blood and urine.  For more information, please visit the following link:
